Our staff have spent the first part of this term working with your child and assessing them against their past and future goals. Our Primary Progess reports will be coming to you in the coming weeks to provide you with an indication of how your child has settled in this year. As always, if you would like to discuss this report with your child’s teacher, please ring our office (6272 7574) to make a time to chat.
You might have seen the recent talk in the media about reading. Helping your child to learn to read is our most important task. Families can help by:
- Encouraging children to borrow books from the library (ours or the Glenorchy LINC)
- Sharing books with your child
- Talking about words – on signs, in the supermarket, in catalogues
- Playing games with words – e.g. – how many words can you find with the letter B at the beginning?
- Listening to and talking with your child
- Singing songs and making up word rhymes
Next term we will be running a parent workshop about how to help our children to read proficiently. Watch out for the details in our newsletter. In the meantime – if you would like some ideas, please ring us and we’ll organise a time to meet with you.
And finally, a cautionary note about social media. I have noticed that many of our children have access to FaceBook, Messenger, or similar applications. Please remember that children are not meant to be using these platforms until they are 13. Children can make mistakes on social media. They need to be supervised and supported to stay safe. Remember that nothing should be said on social media that you would not say to somebody in person.
Kind regards
Wendy Potter
Prep-1 Morrisby/Paul have been learning about the letter 'i' this week in class. There are some great words that start with the letter 'i' - ice cream, igloo and insects.
Here are some of their colourful insect masterpieces.
Our very successful event was held on Wednesday 3 March on the front oval. Many of our parents were able to come along to meet their child's teacher and join in the many activiites provided by our staff. This event is always a wonderful opportunity for parents to get to know their child's teacher in an informal and fun setting. Despite the occasional chill wind (which was responsible for the pink and sticky fairy floss fairies!) the weather was kind to us and there were many children and families participating in the varied activities designed by our staff.
Our little people had a fast and furious round robin of events on Wednesday afternoon on the front oval. The sun shone and the sky was blue as children competed in the sack race, sprints, high jump, ball and thong race and parachute. There was much excitment from the children and from the parents who came along to cheer them on and offer encouragment. A great big thank you to our grade 5-6 leaders - what an effort! The carnival was such a success because of their leadership and our younger students really enjoyed the experience of having the older students running the activities.
Inter Primary Athletics Carnival
Yesterday afternoon we welcomed back a very excited group of students who had represented our school at the Interschool Athletic Carnival held on the Domain. It was a very successful day with all our students making us proud with both their behaviour and their performances. Everyone did a great job and our team came second overall. Congratulations to all of you and thank you to our staff and volunteers.
In recognition of Clean Up Australia Day, students donned rubber gloves and set off around the school grounds in search of litter - and unfortunately they did not have far to look.
Students from both classes would like to remind us all to do our bit to keep our school looking the best it can by making sure we always put our litter in the bin where it belongs!
During class time yesterday a shadow swept out of the sky above the school. To the surprise and delight of us all a paraglider had used our oval to land. He had missed the thermal draft that would have carried him towards the midlands and popped in for a visit at Glenorchy Primary.
National Ride2School Day is on Thursday 18th March. National Ride2School Day is the perfect opportunity to kick-start new healthy habits and promote the many benefits of active travel. We encourage all students and their families to leave the car at home and give riding, walking, scooting, or skating to school a go. It is sure to be a fantastic day!
During First and Second Play the Hull Street carpark will be closed for some 'Wheelie Good Activities'!!
Wheelie machines and bike helmets can be stored in the gym on the day. Even some of our teachers will be riding to school!
Please make sure that you wear your bike helmets.
