Welcome to our last newsletter for term 1 – I can’t believe we are here already!
Our students and staff have been focussed, busy and productive. It is great to feel the positive energy around learning in our school. Our staff continue to lead, to model, to support and challenge each and every student to grow socially, emotionally, and academically. Our staff understand that our students learn best when they are working in safe, respectful, supportive and creative learning environments and we are seeing the benefits of our planning, hard work and collaboration in student achievement.
It has been wonderful to see so many of our parents coming along to the learning celebrations which are a culmination of the classroom learning so far this year. Parents have participated in activities and you can see the enjoyment of the students as they share their skills, knowledge and have fun.
Families will have received their child’s progress report with details about attitude, behaviour and effort. These reports give parents an indication of how their child has settled into the new school year and how well they are consolidating prior learning. Please feel free to ring us (6272 7574) if you would like to chat to your child’s teacher about this report.
The last day for term one is Wednesday 31st March. Thursday is a professional learning day for staff. Our teachers will be working with teachers from other schools to ensure that our assessments against the Australian curriculum are the same as in other schools.
On behalf of all staff, may I wish you and your families a safe, fun-filled, family-filled holiday? We’ll see you on Wednesday 21st April.
Kind regards - Wendy Potter
Harmony Day was a great opportunity for Glenorchy Primary to celebrate the diversity of backgrounds, languages and families that make up our school community. Students across the school created posters, with a photo, a sentence about themselves and a map to show where their family is from. A selection of these are on display in the school office.
Our Launching Into Learning group was a rainbow of colours and beautiful fabric this week with so many of our families dressed in their tradition costumes.
At the end of term each class holds a Celebration of Learning where the class celebrates and shares the learning experiences and challenges with families who visit the classroom and join in the games and activities.
1/2 Brunning,1/2 Duncan/Watson,5/6 Griffith and 5/6 Alexander held their celebrations this week, sharing reading, classroom activities and kitchen and garden experiences.
Thank you to all of the families that were able to come along.
For those classes yet to hold their celebration, check out the 'key dates' section of this newsletter for the day and time.
It was an excited group of students - (and teachers!) that headed out on an excursion to explore Mawson's Hut and the Museum last Friday.
Both classes have been researching Antarctica and what life would have been like for the early explorers. Mawson's Hut is an exact replica of the original hut used by the 18 men who explored the Antarctic from 1911-1914. Our students were amazed how tough life must have been for the expeditioners spending three years on the icy continent.
The visit to the Tasmanian Museum gave students the chance to explore the Antarctic display and various other exhibits.
As the Botanical Gardens was closed we were unable to explore the Sub-Antarctic Plant House which replicates the Macquarie Island environment but we had lunch and fun under blues skies at Cornelian Bay Park.
We are very proud of our canine colleagues Claire, Oscar and Moo Dog who were recently the feature of an article written by the Education Department in recognition of National Puppy Dog Day (23 March).
The link below will take you to the article written about our lovable school dogs.

Many of our students were happy to take part in the Ride 2 School Day last Thursday, with lots of bikes and scooters being ridden to school.
Well done to Mr Pennicott and Mr Wood, who met a group of students at Cornelian Bay and rode the 6km to school.
The Hull Street car park was closed off to traffic during first and second play and students had some 'Wheelie' good fun on the bike jumps.
Glenorchy Primary has made the decision to discontinue the school banking program.
We would like to thank all of our student bankers for their participation, your account will still be active with the Commonwealth Bank and you can continue to make deposits at the branch.
A special thank you to our wonderful parent volunteer, Vanita, who has donated so much time in supporting the program.
