Today marks the end of term 2. What a great term of learning it has been at Glenorchy Primary.
Did you know that all schools in Tasmania follow the Australian curriculum (version 9)? Like all schools, our main focus is reading, writing and mathematics. We also teach science, history, social science, health and physical education and the arts. We aim to offer a range of varied learning experiences each term. This term, our students recently participated in Fire Education, cross country and Touch Football sessions. We have visiting chess masters who share their skills, our Hoops for Life program gives students not only basketball skills but some life skills that will help them navigate difficult situations, and our excursions into the community expose our children to life outside the school environment. On your behalf, I sincerely thank our hard working staff who work tirelessly to provide rich, interesting and valued learning experiences for your child.
I would like to acknowledge all our families who were able to come along to our parent/teacher evenings to celebrate the achievements of our learners. I would also like to thank our wonderful staff who put a lot of effort into presenting student's work and sharing the highs (and sometimes the lows!) of the work and effort of their students so far this year. Please remember, if you were unable to come along, give us a ring (62727574) to make another time to chat.
This afternoon in assembly, I will have the pleasure of giving some students certificates to acknowledge their learning and growth. I have had some people ask me how students are chosen to receive this acknowledgement. At our school, we try hard to see each individual student’s strengths and to celebrate their successes. We look to celebrate students who are genuinely trying their best at their level and who are meeting their individual goals.
I wish you all a happy and safe holiday and remember to keep reading with your child!
Kind regards
Our class recently visited the Bellerive Police Station and we went behind the scenes at Woolworths as part of our unit of work on community helprs. We looked at community helpers who support us and the ways in which we are all connected and are responsible for each other.
We were so excited when we got back to school we talked about what sort of helper we wanted to be when we grow up.
Kinder Gold have had a great term of learning and navigating the changes that being at school all day brings to their lives. What better way to celebrate the end of term 2 than a pizza and ice cream party?! Each student prepared their own pizza with toppings and enjoyed them freshly cooked at lunchtime with their classmates.
Then of course the perfect ending to any celebration is an ice cream cone with chocolate ice magic!
It is winter time and gosh hasn't it been cold! Nearly cold enough for snow!
Some of our classes have been in winter mode and have been creating snowmen. We used white paint on blue paper to make the body of the snowman and then added some paper noses, scarves and hats. We also learnt how to make paper snowflakes by cutting out shapes in square pieces of paper. Did you know that no two snowflakes are the same? Ours are not either.
Students in 5-6 Bacic have been reading The BFG.
The BFG - who is a big friendly giant - loves to catch dreams which he stores in jars. Our students captured their own dreams and they are on display in the school foyer.
Pop in and have a look.
Fissure Sealant and Fluoride Varnish Program
Oral Health Services Tasmania (OHST) visited Glenorchy Primary School for the Fissure Sealant and Fluoride Varnish Program (FSFVP) 20 June - 27 June. This is a preventative program that seals the grooves in young teeth and strengthens enamel to help fight against decay. Students in Kinder, Prep and Grades 1, 2 and 6 were involved. The ages of these grade levels are the optimum time for dental intervention.
